Is there a connection between acne and stress? Yes, apparently there is. Stress does not cause acne, though it’s now recognised that it can contribute to making your acne worse.
But is it your acne that’s CAUSING the stress?
It’s much like the age-old question of what comes first, the chicken or the egg. Sure, your acne can cause you stress, but in most cases the acne is already in full flight and is being aggravated by stressful situations.
Excerpt from an acne and stress connection study :
Paykel’s scale of stressing events showed that the majority of the patient group (67%) reported a relationship between the onset of acne and the occurrence of a stressing event. This was particularly true for recent stressing events, mainly those associated with emotional life (30%) and education.

It may well be that you find yourself in some of these situations, and they are unavoidable. But an honest and searching look at your present lifestyle will tell you if YOU are responsible for bringing on more acne outbreaks.
Before you can start treating acne and stress, you have to determine what stress you can control and what stress you have no control over.
Stress You Can’t Control …..
This is types of stress that a lot of people will experience at some point in their life. If you find yourself in any of these situations, it’s possible your acne will calm down when they have passed. These can include …..
- The death of a friend or loved one.
- A relationship break-up.
- Financial Problems.
- A job interview.
- Starting a new job.
- Exams coming up.
- Moving house.
These are ‘life experiences’ and some of these situations are, for most of us, unavoidable. Although they may contribute to making your acne worse, there’s very little you can do other than find a Good Acne Treatment.
Managing Stress …..
The little things that cause stress can be BIG things as far as your acne is concerned. You DO have control over these, and by making the necessary changes you can go a long way towards reducing your acne outbreaks.
When you’re stressed or anxious it affects almost every part of your body, including the skin. Stress releases chemicals that pump adrenalin, forcing more cortisol into the bloodstream, the sebaceous glands produce more oil, your pores become clogged, and hey presto, your acne is rampant.
What a mouthful! Simply put, when you’re stressed out, your hormones are jumping all over the place! But there’s things you can do to reduce stress.
- Get enough sleep. You’ll feel better and less stressed.
- Rushed in the morning? Get up 30 mins earlier, and relax for 20 mins.
- Got things to do? Do them, don’t put them off.
- Avoid people who annoy or stress you.
- Get some exercise. Even a short walk helps.
- Make time for yourself. A quiet 30 mins each day works wonders.
These are all very simple things, but if you do them, they will make a difference. Your acne and stress will be less of a problem, plus you’ll feel and look better.
