Is there a connection between acne and diet? Although that subject is still open to debate, there’s no getting away from the fact that one of the secrets of having good skin is eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water.
There’s a few things we can eat that will make a huge difference in the way our skin looks, and our health.
Some people have claimed that eating these foods cured their acne. So, does diet have an influence?
Acne is the outward result of something that’s not quite right inside the body. This could be due to a build up of toxins in the system, so eating the foods that can help our body detox would be a good place to start.
Now this is where you have to be honest with yourself.
Ask yourself; Are you eating all the wrong things? Fast foods and lots of sugar puts weight on some people, while for others it can result in skin problems.
It doesn’t take much soul searching, if you’re eating poorly you probably know it already. Whether or not you believe that there is a possible connection between acne and diet, it will certainly do you no harm to adopt better eating habits.
Good Foods For Treating Acne :
Low fats and high fibre diets stabilise blood sugar levels and reduce sebum (oil) production, so the secret to a good diet for treating acne is more about the foods you add to your diet, rather than what you remove.
So if you’re a chocolate lover, there’s no need to panic. OK, it’s never a good idea to overdo the chocolate, and fast foods are not very healthy, but you don’t have to be a slave to your diet, just try to be sensible with how you eat.
Raw foods are good. Eating raw fruit and vegetables is a great way to detox. If you can manage to go for short periods eating nothing else but raw fruit and veg, you’ll see a great improvement in how your skin looks.
Red beets are also good. They help clean out poison toxins that have built up in the liver, thin the blood, and improve circulation.
Fish oils and dairy products are a good source of vitamin A, which is good for removing toxins, strengthening the skin’s protective tissue, and reducing the amount of sebum (oil) produced by the body.
Whole grains, eggs, meat and fish contain vitamin B2, which is good for reducing stress, and also helps to maintain healthy looking skin.
Whole grains, eggs, mushrooms and nuts have Zinc, which is a good antioxidant. It helps to regulate the oil glands, and is also good for healing skin tissue, which will cut down the risk of acne scarring.
Getting away from food, water is also important, as dehydration can be a contributing factor to an acne outbreak. Try to get into the habit of drinking plenty of water, it works wonders for the skin.
With this kind of diet it’s not unusual to see your acne get worse before it gets better, but stick with it and you’ll reap the benefits.
Working on the inside of your body first, will help your acne problem, of that there’s no doubt. With the research I’ve done to date I’m certain that there is definitely a connection between acne and diet. I’m also convinced that the right kind of diet is the key to help get rid of acne permanently.
Here’s a brief excerpt from one acne and diet study :
One group followed a typical Western teen diet of refined, highly processed carbohydrate foods while the other group ate a more natural diet higher in protein and low-GI foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and legumes.
“Those on the low-GI (*glycemic index) diet reduced facial acne by 50 per cent, and showed improvements in their self-esteem and overall wellbeing,” Dr Smith said. [Source : RMIT University, Australia]
*The Glycemic Index is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. A low GI diet is good for treating acne.
Examples of low GI foods are :
Fruits and vegetables (except potatoes, watermelon), grainy breads, pasta, legumes/pulses, milk, yoghurt, products extremely low in carbohydrates (some cheeses, nuts, cooking oil) [Source : Wikipedia]
Good news and bad news : Chocolate is low GI, but high in fat 🙂
